On 11th of March CinéClub showing ‘The Boxing Girls of Kabul’
This Wednesday on 11th of March Cinema club invites you to watch the documentary “The Boxing Girls of Kabul” (Les boxeuses de Kaboul). The film is directed by Ariel Nasr and has received several awards in 2012 and 2013. As usual, for half an hour before the show the audience will have the opportunity to practice their French by participating in activities related to the subject of the film. The show will take place in club “NABAKLAB” (Riga, 12 boulevard Z. A. Meierovica).
“The Boxing Girls of Kabul” is an inspiring story of a group of young Afghan women with a goal to represent their country as boxers in an international competition and to attempt to qualify for the 2012 Olympic Games in London. Their training takes place in Ghazi stadium which had previously been used as the execution site by Taliban movement. Despite harassment and threats the girls persistently and courageously move towards their goal.
The film has received many awards, including “Best documentary” for ViewFinders, the Atlantic Film Festival for Youth (2012), Inspirit Foundation Pluralism award in the international documentary festival “Hot Docs” 2012 and was nominated for Genie Award as “Best Short Documentary” in 2013.
CinéClub is open for all the interested since 23rd of September, 2014. This year we have shown highly regarded documentaries such as “Soraida, a Woman of Palestine” (Soraida, une femme de Palestine) and “Shake Hands with the Devil” (J’ai serré la main du diable), but for the final show on 25th of March we will be offering “Gabrielle” (2013, director Louise Archambault).
